Former Fire Defender Bakary Soumare Starts in African Cup of Nations For Mali

Representing his home country of Mali, former Chicago Fire central defender Bakary Soumare helped Les Aigles complete an astounding comeback tying African Cup of Naitons host Angola on Sunday. Mali went behind 4-0 to Angola only to score four goals in the second half led by Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita. Soumare left the Chicago Fire last season after an altercation with then coach Dennis Hamlett.

The 24-year-old defender knows plies his trade in Ligue 1 for US Boulogne and has played already in 10 matches. You may remember that Soumare had expressed an desire to play for the United States before he found out that he would not be granted his US citizenship in time for the World Cup. It's a shame too, because with Oguchi Onyweu out it would have been nice to have Bakary as an option in central defense. Oh well.
